Nelson Mills III
Trumpet
Nelson Mills III is a Houston, Texas native that began his
professional career on trumpet at the age of thirteen when he debuted with the Burton Jazz
Quartet. After a notable stay at Texas Southern University, Nelson performed with a number
of commercial bands, most notably the T.S.U. Tornados from 1967-1971. They gained national
attention for backing up Archie Bell and the Drells on the hit record "Tighten
Up". Two of their own hits, "Gettin' the Corners" and "The Goose"
were distributed on Atlantic Records. Nelson Mills III also played many shows for other
celebrities such as the Temptations, the Four Tops and the Sparrows. He has toured and
recorded with Joe "Guitar" Hughes.
A highly gifted
composer, songwriter and arranger, Nelson's charts are performed regularly. Mills has also
performed with notable jazz artists such as Arnett Cobb, Conrad Johnson, Milt Larkin. and
the New Breed Jazz Band in Kansas City. Nelson performs regularly with Ronnie Renfrow's
Big Band and the Renegades Orchestra where he is featured not only as a trumpeter but a
vocalist as well.
Aside from his musical
career, Nelson makes a living as a steel consultant.
