A Poem -by Andrea Hill

When I don’t want
to do something, then that should be that.
But there are always those people who
want to control me, push me
around and tell me how to breathe.

But what I don’t understand, is how they
can’t understand, any person’s right to
make their own choices in life,
even if they are wrong.

Even God gave us free will, letting
first man and woman choose to
eat or obey. Why then, can’t I be trusted
to see the eminent danger for myself?

I don’t think mankind is a riddle to
be solved, taken apart and puzzled over
we are far more complex then that,
at least, I hope we are...

But sadly, some cannot see that,
and everyone to them is a challenge, an obstacle
to overcome, a hurdle to conquer,
I am not a challenge, I am simply myself,
as we all are, eventually.

Then why, if life is so simple and full, must
those who cannot see seek to blind
all else, shut the light from babe and crone alike?
Is it an instinct, to fear the unknown?

Why must we always be so blind?
Perhaps it is human nature, if there is
such a thing. Yet I don’t think there can be, it
would fit too well.

No, there are those who fit seamlessly into
the fabric of Time, and others who
must leap and show their string to all, must
be admired, or noticed at least, spoken of,
and remembered...

And then there is me.
I write this to help others to see how
I see. Not with a blindfold, nor the wide innocent
eyes of a child, no matter how I yearn to.

I see how I see, others try to oppress me, or force me,
cover my sight with this belief or that...
I just want to be, and let others choose for themselves
whether or not to walk my road.

If not, that’s okay, diversity is life itself
and monotony breeds only death itself in Time,
But if so, then I’ll be there to help them along,
and tread the paths I’ve forged,
among over-grown steps in Everything
